You can only edit content items which have been assigned and locked to/by you. Note: when you create a content item, the item is automatically assigned and locked, so you can edit it right away.
To edit a content item, you must have been assigned the 'Authoring' task of that item. This may be done by another user (an Editor, a Publisher, or an Administrator). You also have the possibility to assign the item to yourself. To do this:
go to /content/admin/index.jsp, and click on the name of the content item
click on the red Workflow tab
under 'Tasks', look for the 'Authoring' task; if it says 'enabled' then you can assign the task to yourself
click on the name of the 'Authoring' task
under 'Assigned users', look at the names of users who have been assigned this task (if any). If your name is in the list, you don't need to do anything, you can go and edit the item (see the section called “Editing a content item”)
to add yourself to the list of users, click on 'Assign user', then enter your name or email address and click on 'Search'
the next screen will display your name, tick the box in front of your name, and click on 'Add Members'
that's it; your name is in the list now

Once you have assigned a content item to yourself, you should 'lock' it. That way you will take control of the item, and nobody else will be able to edit it at the same time. To do this:
go to /content/admin/index.jsp
find the name of the content item in the list, and click on it
under 'Your assigned tasks', click on 'Lock task' next to 'Authoring'
